Our 1:1 Team exists to make Rock Point Church welcoming to people with special needs and their families!
We are available to serve your family at these services:
Sunday 9a
Sunday 1045a
We strive to:
- introduce people with special needs and their families to Christ.
- show people of all abilities love, compassion, and understanding.
- ensure that all members of a family are loved and learning
Our 1:1 Classrooms exist to:
- support students so they can be successful (which may include sensory support, communication support, support with appropriate interpersonal interactions, and more)
- provide models of appropriate communication and interaction
- fade out support as much as possible to allow for independence
- provide feedback to families about students’ successes
Our 1:1 classrooms are available during Sunday services for students who require a quieter environment, more visual support, and a higher student-volunteer ratio. The ratio in these classrooms is one volunteer per student PLUS one additional volunteer.
CURRICULUM
We use the Chirp Curriculum in our 1:1 Classrooms. The Chirp Curriculum has been written to teach students with language disorders and cognitive delays who God is, who Jesus is, and how to follow Jesus in a way that enhances their skills and keeps them engaged. Please see www.chirpcc.com for more information about the Chirp Curriculum.
COMMUNICATION
We endeavor to provide whatever is required to enable a student to communicate successfully.
In order to encourage more advanced expressive communication, we provide and use communication books in our 1:1 Classrooms. See the Picture Exchange Communication System protocol, here. Our toys are stored out of reach in order to require children to request what they want to play with. This allows for repeated practice of communication and interpersonal skills.
In order to support emerging receptive communication, we use visual reminders of classroom routines, Class Rules, turn-taking protocols, and stories. We use visual timers to allow students to see how much time is left until a preferred activity. Volunteers are specially trained to provide limited verbal input, lots of thinking time, and many visual cues when encouraging communication.
SENSORY INPUT
Students with sensory needs will love our 1:1 Classrooms! Children in our 1:1 Classroom are able to choose which sensory experiences they need and request them with as much support as they require. Children can request: beans/rice, shaving cream, gears, marble tower, weighted vest, train, and more.
ENROLLMENT
You must arrange in advance for 1:1 support for any student. From the time you initially contact us, it will likely be approximately two to four weeks before we have the volunteers trained and in place to provide 1:1 support. Please contact Christie Priem for more information or to inquire about 1:1 support. You will be asked to fill out a packet that gives us more information about the student’s interests and needs. We will use that information to recommend the best placement for your child.
Once a student is enrolled, two volunteers will be assigned to that particular student. The volunteers will work with your student on an alternating rotation. This rotating schedule means that students get to know their volunteers, but they don’t become overly attached to any one person. This is a great help as we help students transition from being adult-dependent to being increasingly independent.
Please stop by our classroom, room #27 located within the Early Childhood wing, or ask any Early Childhood Service Coordinator, to pick up a Family Information Packet or e-mail Christie at for more information. We look forward to meeting your family!
